Fitting a new front door can significantly improve your home’s security, insulation, and curb appeal. Here’s a quick guide to help you through the process:

Steps to Fit a New Front Door

1. Choose the Right Door

  • Material Options:

    • Wood – Classic and stylish, but needs maintenance

    • uPVC – Low maintenance and affordable

    • Composite – Durable, secure, and energy-efficient

    • Aluminum/Steel – Very strong, modern look

  • Style: Consider glazed panels, color, panel design, and hardware (knocker, handle, letterbox).

2. Measure the Opening

  • Measure width, height, and depth of the doorway.

  • Check for squareness of the frame—important for proper fitting.

3. Remove the Old Door

  • Unscrew and carefully remove the door and frame.

  • Clean and prep the opening—remove old sealant, repair masonry if needed.

4. Install the New Frame

  • Position the frame and use packers to level it.

  • Secure the frame with frame fixings or screws through the sides.

  • Check that it’s plumb and square.

5. Fit the New Door

  • Hang the door on the hinges.

  • Check alignment and that it opens and closes smoothly.

  • Fit locks, handles, and weather stripping.

6. Seal and Finish

  • Seal around the frame with exterior-grade silicone or foam.

  • Install trim as needed.

  • Paint or finish the door (if required).
